Wanderlei Silva

For those of you who don't know who Wanderlei Silva is he a mixed martial arts fighter from Brazil.
He's fought in Japan's PRIDE Fighting Championships and here in the UFC, Ultimate Fight Championship.
He was making an appearance at the Nellis AFB exchange. The exchange was doing a meet and greet with him in the room I where had my studio set up. After he was finished signing autographs I asked if he'd sit and let me take a photo of him.

Here he is.

Seemed like a nice guy...wouldn't want to get in the ring (octagon) with him. His nick name is "The Axe Murderer"...for a good reason. In his country, Brazil, he's called "Cachorro Louco", "Mad Dog".

That's all for this post. Something a little different than my usual stuff.

New Look

Well as you can see the new look is here. Everything should be working just fine. As I say in the sidebar, Welcome, I was getting tired of the dark cramped look of my blog. This is wider, lighter, cleaner and I just like the colors...for now.
I hope you like it.

I'm working on a new look for my blog. Thought it was time for a change. If you'd like to see what I have so far here's the look.
Let me know what you think.

Hoover Dam

This afternoon I decided to take a short trip to see Hoover Dam. I've flown into Las Vegas a few times and have see Hoover Dam and Lake Mead from the air but never actually went to see them. I'm staying across from Nellis AFB and it was a little more than a half an hour drive. Hoover is on US 93, actually 93 crosses on the dam itself. A new road is being built and will be done about 2014...they keep moving the date back. I guess the biggest hold up is the bridge they are building to bypass Hoover. There will be a great view of the dam from the bridge once it is done.

I took the $30 tour inside the dam. They have cheaper ones but this one takes you way inside. The place is really interesting. Not something you get to do very often. They've changed the tour since 9/11 for security reasons. Who knows, they may stop doing them some day.

Here's a shot of the front of the dam. It was taken from the observation deck at the visitor center before the tour.

The dam is 45 feet thick at the top and 660 feet at the base and 726 high. That's a lot of concrete. As a matter of fact it is still curing.

Here's another shot showing part of Lake Mead. The white above the water is the high water mark.

This next picture shows one of the pipes where the water runs out after powering the generators. We were standing right over it and could feel the vibrations as the water ran through.

This next picture is of the generators. The generators had to be assembled on site. They are way too big to be put in place in one piece. Pretty damn impressive.

This next shot is of one of the tunnels running through the dam. This is what I basically paid extra to! Actually it is all pretty cool.

I have more pictures that I might post later. Till then these will have to do.

Extraterrestrial Highway (Area 51)

At the end of this post is an update. I should have driven up the first road. It leads to Area 51.

Yesterday I drove back to Las Vegas from Wendover. On the way I passed a bunch of stuff I had already photographed. Very nice drive, great scenery, but after awhile it all looks the same. Near the end of Nevada 318, basically where it meets 93, is a small, very small town, called Crystal Springs. It's more like a group of homes. Well, this is where Nevada 375 starts. This part of 375 is also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. The Extraterrestrial Highway stretches from 318 to Rachel, NV, and is where 375 passes Area 51. Of course, I had to go and look. Like much of Nevada it is mountainous. There are mountains and hills and valleys. The road starts straight and then you drive through a curvy pass drive over a rise and you see a valley and the road straightens. You'll cross a cattle guard somewhere along the way. Much of this is open range. About 3 hundred yards past the rise I did see a dead cow with a crow perched on picture. anyway, I drove all the way, about 30 to 40 miles, to Rachel, another small group of houses and buildings. Along the way I did stop and take a few pictures.

Here's what I saw when I first started up 375. It's a shop and museum that sells souvenirs and maps...I didn't go in, just read the sign out front. I do like the alien...he's huge.

Here's one of the first shots I took at about 15 miles in...just before the dead cow. I'm not sure where the dirt road on the left leads....

Here's another shot of the road. It has no name but it does have a stop sign where it meets 375.

I didn't see a "black mailbox" but I did see this at the end of another name and a stop sign again. I believe this is the mailbox of area 51 lore. It's more like chipped faded white mailbox. It's about half way between Crystal Springs and Rachel. You can't miss it. It's the only thing you'll see out there.

Here's the sign for the Extraterrestrial Highway just outside of Rachel, NV.

I didn't see any UFO's. I did see a lot of dead snakes on the road and one live one. Interesting place. There are many dirt roads leading up to the mountains...again like much of Nevada. I wonder where these go.

Here's a couple of satellite shots from Google Maps showing where I took a couple of these Photos. The roads do have names, Mailbox Rd. and Groom Lake Rd. I was closer to Area 51 than I thought. I should have drive up Groom Lake Rd. I guess before you get to the guardhouse and gate there are warning signs. Would have made a great shot.

Bonneville Salt Flats

Today I drove out to the Bonneville Salt Flats. The area is just a few miles from Wendover in Utah. Wendover is in Nevada and Utah. There is a line painted across the main drag. All the casinos are on the Nevada side. Anyway, I drove out to Bonneville and took a few pictures. And then drove all over that area taking pictures. I drove down a couple of gravel roads and up a road called Leppy Pass. Here are the pictures. The first two are of the Bonneville Salt Flats. The third was taken on Leppy Pass Rd.

This is where they race cars and motorcycles. This is also where the Donner Party got mired in the soggy mud during the wet season. You've read what happened after that.
Just a little snowed and they are waiting for it to dry so they can race. Bonneville Lake is back?

This picture was taken only a few hundred yards from the first. You can see where people drive their cars on the salt flats. Most of it is really muddy and many people get their cars stuck in the mud...saw one stuck here just two days before. It sank into the mud up to it's under carriage.

Here's a shot I took while driving up Leppy Pass Rd. Just past the gate...cattle guard...the road turns into another gravel road. I have no idea where this goes but it did look like a fun drive. Just to the right of the mountain are more salt flats. This area is about six or seven miles north of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Tomorrow I head back to Las Vegas. Another long drive and more pictures.

Wendover Will

This is just a quick post. This is what you'll see if you enter West Wendover, Nevada from the west.

It's Wendover Will. He lights up at night. I may try and get a picture of him tonight. What if he was called Bill?

That is Wendover in the road and a bunch of casinos.

Here's Will at night...exciting, right?

More to come.

Just another picture

Nothing too exciting. Just a picture of the rental car, a Mazda 6, and some scenery. Looks like a car advertisement.

Maybe something more interesting later.

Las Vegas to Wendover

I just did a little drive yesterday from Las Vegas to Wendover. Took a few pictures. Part of the drive is on Nevada 318. This is close to the Extraterrestrial Highway, Nevada 375, and area 51.
Here are a few pictures I took on the way.

These were all taken on Nevada 93.

This last one was taken 0n Nevada 318.

Maybe on my way back I'll drive up Nevada 375...looking for the black mailbox.

I'll have more later.
